World War I and the Great Depression dating to 1929 triggered a drastic reduction in immigration. In addition, as the result of improvements in medical science and the trans-Atlantic crossing, not to mention vaccination, Grosse Île's role was downgraded to that of monitoring minor cases of infection and early childhood diseases among immigrants. The station closed its doors for good in 1937.
